St. Margaret of Scotland Parish
Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Open House and Sunday Social is today after the 12:15 pm Mass. Please go over to the school to see all of the classrooms and enjoy the Sunday Social. On Monday we officially welcome back the teachers and staff for the 2011-2012 school year!
On Wednesday night we will have a parent meeting for the Pre-School and Kindergarten parents at 6:00 pm in the school.
The first day of school for students in grades 1-8 is on Thursday. Thursday and Friday will be full days of school for students.
This will be an exciting year for all of us as we will be visited by the Middle States Leadership Team in October for our Reaccredidation. The staff has been working on this project for the last eighteen months and are excited for the team to come and verify the great things that we do here at our school. I will keep you informed of our progress as we get closer.
The Catholic Men's Fellowship of Pittsburgh and The King's Men of Philadelphia are sponsoring a retreat for men called “Into the Wild” at Raccoon Creek State Park September 8-11, 2011. This experiential weekend features fishing, orienteering, outdoor cooking, archery, and faith presented in a masculine modality. Bishop David Zubik will be coming to the retreat for a Friday evening talk.
No experience is necessary and space is limited. For more information, call Damian Wargo at 215-906-8878 or Jim Zern at 412-818-3226. A 15% discount is being given with the mention of this bulletin announcement. Financial aid is also available based on need.
Next Saturday, August 27, we will start off the 2011-12 year of Youth Ministry with an afternoon of food, music, games, fellowship, and prayer! The BBQ Kickoff will start at 2:00 pm at the Hoehle House and conclude with us attending the 4:00 pm Mass together. Hope to see you there!
Pennsylvania has been approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to receive $105 million to aid homeowners facing foreclosure through the Emergency Homeowners Loan Program, or EHLP. The foreclosure prevention program is intended to help families in danger of losing their home due to involuntary unemployment, under-employment, or for medial reasons. EHLP will help homeowners in danger of imminent foreclosure with payments of arrearages, plus up to 24 months of monthly payments on their mortgage, principal, interest, mortgage insurance premiums, taxes, and hazard insurance.
To qualify for an EHLP loan homeowners must meet certain HUD requirement including: current gross income must be at least 15 percent lower than their pre-event income, must have missed 3 payments on their mortgage, property must be owner occupied and homeowner's principal residence, and be a single family residence.
In Southwestern Pennsylvania, call 2-1-1, or 1-800-522-4171 to get connected to help.
Less than half of our students are registered for CCD Class for 2011-12. Monday classes, which are usually full by now, are still open, so register soon. Registration forms are in the back of church on the Book Rack, or notify us "by email" <smosdre at gmail dot com> and we will email you a form. Parents please know, that your child(ren) will not be able to attend the first class unless you register. Sorry, we can take no “walk-ins” that evening.
Classes begin September 19 and 20. All parents are expected to attend with their child(ren). We will meet in church for a prayer service, and then move to the cafeteria for refreshments. Parents will have an opportunity to discuss goals and curriculum with catechists.
Next weekend, August 27-28, 2011, we will have a second collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign and Catholic University of America.
Catholic Communications Campaign, in partnership with our diocesan communication office, has been our voice in the national media. Since 50% of the contributions remain in our diocese, this collection helps support our weekly televised Masses and various catechetical video programs.
The Catholic University of American Campaign helps defray costs in the form of financial aid through scholarships to provide a Catholic college education to student who otherwise would not be able to attend.
On September 18 at the 10:00 am Mass we will celebrate and commission the people who catechize the children and adults of our parish. Please pray for them at this, the beginning of our “new” school year.
The Altar candles are given this week for a Special Intention.
The St. Margaret Adult Choir is looking for new members. We have revised our rehearsal schedule to accommodate more flexibility for our parishioners. The adult choir meets for two Wednesday evenings a month, from 7:30 pm-8:45 pm and two Sunday mornings of the month at 9:00 am.
The choir is open to all adults, and those of high-school age. Joining the choir is a terrific way of using one's God-given talents in the services of the church. NO tryout are required. You do not have to have a fabulous voice and you do not need to be able to read music. We can help you with that. What you do need is a love of music and a commitment to meet for practice.
We usually sing at the 10:00 am Mass on Sundays from September through May. If you are interested, please contact our Director of Music, Kevin Maurer at 412-922-8816. Our first choir rehearsal will be on Wednesday, September 7 at 7:30 pm in the church, to be followed by an Ice Cream Social in the school cafeteria. Hope to see you there!
What is a Resurrection Choir? This is a group of women and men who are able to be “on call” to give their time to minister to grieving families by leading the assembly in song at funeral liturgies throughout the year.
The choir is always open for additional members. We are especially in need of male singers. If you are interested in this ministry, please call the Parish Office at 412-921-0745 extension 8, or Kevin Maurer at 412-922-8816.
Our next Baptism Class is Sunday, September 18 after the 12:15 pm Mass. You must register for the class at 412-921-1613. A date cannot be confirmed for baptism until your document are in the office and you have taken the class.

Catholics in the United States will begin using the long-awaited English translation of the Roman Missal on the First Sunday of Advent in 2011.
This will be preceded by an extended period of education and training leading to the first use of the “third typical edition” of the Roman Missal at English-language Masses on November 27, 2011.
The changes to be implemented in later 2011 include new responses by the people in about a dozen sections of the Mass, although changes in the words used by the celebrant are much more extensive.
At several points during the Mass, for example, when the celebrant says, “The Lord be with you,” the people will respond, in a more faithful translation of the original Latin, “And with your spirit.” In place of the current “The Mass is ended, go in peace,” celebrants will be able to choose from four options, including Pope Benedict's suggestions - “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord” and “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.”
The order and structure of the Mass will not change at all but Catholics will see some new texts for prayers, new observances for saints added to the church calendar in recent decades and such additions as a Mass in thanksgiving for the gift of human life and an extended vigil for Pentecost, similar to the Easter Vigil.
