Catholic Men's Fellowship

An Outdoor Men's Retreat, entitled “Into the Wild” will be held August 19-22, 2010 at Raccoon Creek State Park. The Retreat is being sponsored by The Catholic Men's Fellowship of Pittsburgh and The King's Men of Philadelphia.

This experiential weekend features fishing, orienteering, outdoor cooking, archery, and faith presented in a masculine modality. No experience is necessary and space is limited. “Into the Wild” is excellent for single or married men as well as fathers and sons. For more information, call Damian Wargo at 215-906-8878, or at www.intothewildweekend.com. Financial aid is available.

Forbes Hospice

Forbes Hospice is in need of volunteers. Hospice serves patients who are terminally ill and their families. Volunteers work in a variety of settings and there are many ways to become involved from volunteering to work directly with patients and families, working in the office, in our educational department, as spiritual care givers, community outreach, etc. Volunteers are a vital part of our program - their work is priceless. Call 412-325-7297 if you are interested in volunteering.

World Youth Day 2011

With a little more than a year to go until the commencement of World Youth Day Madrid 2011, the Pontifical Council of the Laity and the Vatican Ministry responsible for WYD has recently approved the theme song for Madrid. The theme song consists of seven verses and a chorus based on the WYD theme, “Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith,̵ which was taken from the letter of St. Paul to the Colossians. The chorus reads:

Firm in the faith, we walk in Christ,
Our friend, our God.
All glory to Him, all glory to Him!
We walk in Christ, firm in the faith.

Now that the theme song has been approved, it will be translated into the official languages of WYD as it will make its debut on the feast of the Virgin of the Almudena on November 9, 2010 at the cathedral in Madrid.

A Message from the Pastor

Christian Freedom

Today's second reading from the letter to the Galatians focuses on freedom. Freedom can mean different things to different people.

We pride ourselves in this country on the fact that we enjoy freedom, which is guaranteed by our constitution. To be free, to some people, means that they may do whatever they please. Through baptism, Christians live in the freedom of the children of God. It is the way we use this freedom that is at the heart of the scriptures we hear today. What is central to true Christian freedom is found in today's second Reading. There, St. Paul writes that “the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself. ”(Galatians 5:14) Freedom in the Christian sense, has a forward-looking thrust. It is true that in baptism we are freed from sin, but there is also freedom for something. And that something is love of neighbor.

How do we spend our Free time?

The first reading and Gospel for today tell stories about people who want to dwell in the past. Christian freedom means that, once the past is taken care of, we move forward toward a future where we can use our freedom to love our neighbors. Too often we are barraged with advertising that tries to tell us exactly how to use our freedom. We should be spending our free time in shopping malls. We should be freely spending our money on SUV's, boats, larger and larger homes, and the biggest-screen TV. We should be spending our leisure time traveling to exotic places. Christian freedom means something quite distinct from these values, espoused by so many in our society. Today the scriptures call us to use our freedom to make this world a better place for the poor and needy. Today is one of those days when the Christian message is clear, concise, and quite easy to grasp. Putting this into practice is the challenging part for all of us.
