RCIA Rite of Welcoming

November 18, 2001

On Sunday, November 18, as we celebrated our patron, St. Margaret of Scotland, we also welcomed nine men and women into a process which will bring them ultimately into full membership in the Catholic Church.

Having completed the eight-week Period of Inquiry concerning our faith, the four women and five men were presented by their sponsors to the pastor, Father Harry Nichols and the parishioners of St. Margaret attending the 10:30 Liturgy.  Each inquirer told us what he/she was asking of the people of God's church.

Father Nichols signed each on the forehead with the cross of Christ, reminder of their baptism into His saving Death and Resurrection.  Each candidate was then led by his/her sponsor to a designated place before the congregation.  There, successively, their ears, eyes, lips, hearts, shoulders, hands, feet, and entire bodies were signed by their sponsors.   Click to see a full-size version of the picture.

The new candidates were then presented with a Bible which would give direction to their faith journey and practice.  All in the church extended hands in blessing of the new candidates.  A long and jubilant round of applause concluded the ritual and began their entrance into the Catechumenate.
